Things To Do in San Francisco
Enjoy the many popular attractions around San Francisco during the day and then relax with your travel companions watching popular cinema classics at a variety of outdoor venues. Most summer outdoor movies in San Francisco start in mid-June, run through mid-August, and generally begin at dusk. This is a fantastic, fun local activity that brings together locals and visitors alike in our in city.
Through the San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation (SFNTF), a not-for-profit organization, everyone can enjoy the Film Night in the Park summer movie events. These free movie screenings begin at dusk on Saturdays at some notable San Francisco parks, such as Dolores Park, Union Square, Washington Square Park, and so on.
If you want to add some flair to your movie viewings, try the Wind Down with Wine & a Movie at the Top of the Mark. Enjoy classic films with complimentary wine tastings. The tasting starts at 5:30 p.m. and the movie begins rolling at 7:30 p.m.
Outside San Francisco, you can also find free movies in the park during the warmer summer months:
Oakland's Jack London Square hosts its own free Waterfront Flicks on the ferry lawn on Thursday nights. Bring a blanket to save your spot while you grab something to eat on the go from one of its casual eateries. Festivities begin at 8 p.m. with trivia and giveaways, and the films start at sundown or around 9 p.m.
In North Oakland, you can catch free outdoor summer movies at the Temescal Street Cinema at 49th Street at Telegraph Ave. Also on Thursdays from June through July, these films begin at 8:45 p.m. and offer free popcorn. You won't catch blockbuster hits at this even though, as the goal of the movie series is to highlight Bay Area artists and their films.
In downtown Redwood City, you can find free Movies on the Square on Thursday evenings. Movies start at approximately 8:45 p.m. and have a limited number of chairs and tables, though you are welcome to bring your own blankets.
For guests not visiting in the summer months, you may still find free movies, though indoors, at the San Francisco Public Library. Search for “Films & Videos” on the calendar of events to find family-friendly or date night movies for your stay in our city.
